The Lötschberg Base Tunnel
The Lötschberg base tunnel, which is operated by BLS, was festively opened for test operation on 15 June 2007. It is the longest tunnel (34,6 km) in the continental Europe. Some more project variants of so called Transalpine corridors throught Switzerland had been carried out before. Two variants had been preferred - the Lötschberg and Gotthard tunnels. The second one is under construction now and will be completed in 2012. The new Lötschberg tunnel was bored from five points - from the north gateway at Frutigen, south gateway at Raron and from three intermediate technological stations at Mitholz, Ferden and Steg.
