The City Transport at Rome
The development process in Rome was similar as in other Western European cities: arising in the end of 19th century, slow failure in the second half of 20th century and new development in its end especially in case of tramway system. Two significant companies were competitors in the Italian capital in the past - S.R.T.O. and A.A.T.M. (later A.T.AG.), completed by STFER (later STEFER) company which was involved in interurban or suburban tramway service. The trolley bus network was in service between 1937 and 1972, the come-back as a substitution of buses is being planned now. The underground construction has been started in 1942. Three lines are in service today and the network is being widen (see the plan).
